Standard
A standard lens (also known as a normal lens) is a lens that produces an image with a field of view that appears natural to the human eye. This is because the angle of view with a standard lens is similar to what the human eye comfortably views. For full-frame cameras, a standard lens typically has a focal length of around 50mm, although a range between 40mm and 60mm is also considered normal. On cameras with crop sensors, the equivalent focal length will be shorter; for example, a 35mm lens is considered standard for an APS-C sensor. Standard lenses reproduce a scene with a natural perspective, similar to what the human eye sees. This means that objects in the foreground and background will appear in proportion to each other, without the exaggerated distances seen with wide-angle lenses or the compressed distances seen with telephoto lenses. Standard lenses are versatile and can be used for a wide range of photography genres, including portraits, landscapes, street photography, and documentary photography. Many standard lenses are "fast" lenses, meaning they have a wide maximum aperture (e.g., f/1.8 or f/2.0). This allows them to gather more light, making them suitable for low-light conditions and creating a shallow depth of field with pleasing background blur (bokeh). Compared to zoom lenses, prime standard lenses (fixed focal length) tend to offer superior optical quality, including sharpness and reduced distortion, due to their simpler optical design. Many standard prime lenses are relatively small and lightweight, making them easy to carry around. While other lenses excel in specific areas (wide-angle for expansive views, telephoto for distant subjects), the standard lens provides a naturalistic, versatile, and high-quality option that many photographers find essential for everyday shooting.
